This Week Playlist (18th Feb 2019)

Here are eight cracking new tracks for you to enjoy. They’re a bit varied this week, with pop, hip hop, rock and soul all featuring. There’s also a distincly political vibe to two of the tracks. Enjoy! 

Cherry Glazerr – Ohio 

I haven’t yet had a chance to listen to Cherry Glazerr’s recent album, but if Ohio is anything to go by then I’m in for a treat. It’s scuzzy rock that’s reminiscent of the Pixies – possibly with a sprinkling of Nirvana – and the delicate vocals – so delicate they’re almost out of the mix –  remind me a little of Grimes. If that’s not enough, wait until your ears get walloped by the guitar…

Ariane Grande – break up with your girlfriend, I’m bored 

So I heard this a week ago and it was instantly a hit in my world (I’ve had the chorus going through my head for a week) but I wanted to listen to the album before posting it. Well in that week it’s gone to number one in the UK. You snooze, you lose. A huge improvement on previous single 7 rings, buwyg,Ib (as no one is calling it) is full of slick production with elements of 90s r’n’b (I haven’t checked the tempos, but it feels like it’d make an awesome mashup with TLC’s No Scrubs) – and touches of modern hip hop. It’s a pop banger from the current master.

ROMANS – Be Fine

Halfway through the second verse London-based artist ROMANS sings ‘How I wished we could turn back time’, which feels particularly fitting given the classic soul vibe he’s producing in this monster single. Beautiful vocals mask the depths of angst and sadness in the lyrics, but this is an absolutely cracking record.

Mindchatter – Blood

The Penguin has previously covered Mindchatter’s first release (Trippy) earlier this year, and Blood follows hot on its heels. Blood feels like a bossa nova waltz has been transported via Thunderbird 4 to an underwater city. Its almost unsettling, nothing is quite what is seems, and there’s a venomous streak running through it.

Maisie Peters – Stay Young 

Stay Young has a clear folk heart, an electronic beat and a proper pop chorus. There’s a lovely innocent and carefree feel to the track, supported by the relatively minimalism of the music arrangement, and Miss Peters has a lovely voice as well.

Foals – On the Luna

The second single from their forthcoming album, Foals have merged their earlier sound with the rockier numbers of recent albums. With strong guitars and repetitive keyboards, this is a track full of energy. Originally called End of Days, this is a tale of generational blame; trying to break out of this world – Trump references and all – a world he feels the previous generation have a lot to answer for.

Vok – In the Dark 

With an album of the same title due on March 1st, Icelanders Vok have pulled together a fun pop track with a cracking chorus. “I better toughen up…” 

Offset – Red Room

Georgia resident Offset’s – long awaited – debut album is set to drop on Friday and the title track Red Room promises some serious storytelling. Embracing the in-vogue auto-tune/vocoder vocal style, there’s brief snipped of his car crash, gang life, domestic struggles and musical success.

The A List – the best 10 new music tracks around right now (January 27th 2019)

Four excellent new entries on this week’s A List, including a third number one in three weeks. This week also features the final appearance from four strong tracks, as they’ve reached the three week limit. 2019 has blessed us with plenty of excellent new music so far, but you should really be prioritising these tracks…

1. James Blake, ROSALIA – Barefoot In The Park [New Entry]

There’s something magical about the track. It feels so enticing, but never quite real. You don’t want to move in case the spell is broken. Emotionally it first feels joyous, but there’s a lurking edge of darkness that creeps into the corner of your eye.

2. Lana Del Rey – hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have – but I have it [Final week]

A profoundly moving five minutes; from self-doubt to abuse to isolation, any song that has Sylvia Plath at its core will undoubtedly veer from weirdness to unimaginable suffering.

3. Me & My Toothbrush – Just Release Me [New Entry]

A supremely catchy dance track that builds and dips, the guitars keep it bopping along and the vocals sound properly old school.

4. Billie Eilish – WHEN I WAS OLDER [Final week]

Full of eery distorted vocals and minimalistic electronic production that combine to create a haunting tone that is really hard to shake off.

5. Lucy Rose – Conversation 

Conversation is full of atmosphere with some beautiful strings. Simple and yet hard-hitting, there’s an air of strength and finality surrounding the delicate vocals.

6. Goldie, James Davidson, Subjective – Rift Valley [Final week]

A track that is best played in the dark. It’s like you’re dreaming after smoking pot. Everything feels captivating yet entirely elusive. The album also became available on streaming platforms this week.

7. Fat White Family – Feet [New Entry]

Fat White Family have returned with their first single since 2016. Feet is dark, danceable and downright impressive. With it’s haunting melody, orchestral flourishes and driving percussion, it brings to mind  a marriage of Woodkid and the True Detective theme song.

8. Sam Smith, Normani – Dancing With A Stranger [Final week]

A devastatingly simple pop track full of regrets. Sam Smith does heartbreaks better than almost anyone, and the simple production on Dancing with a Stranger leaves the listener to drown in the guilt and misplaced anger of a rebound one night stand.

9. Mindchatter – Trippy [New Entry]

Trippy is probably the most apt song title of the year so far. This track has some wonderful production throughout, taking modern hip hop and r’n’b production, inverting it and giving it a low key vibe.

10. Hot Flash Heat Wave – Sky So Blue 

Sky So Blue is a lazy summer afternoon in a park, drifting off into reverie through the sheer fatigue of doing nothing at all. It’s a cocktail of synths, psychedelia and sunshine. Lots of sunshine.

Another Sky – Tree (Live at Hackney Road) 

I saw former Goldsmith Uni students Another Sky listed on a few websites and blogs I respect as a band to keep an eye on, so last week I checked them out. This live track was released on New Year’s Day and oscillates between haunting and enchanting. The most striking feature of the track is Catrin Vincent’s voice, which sores (?) above the – mostly – mellow instrumentation. Its a hugely impressive voice, and having spent a few hours pondering I can’t immediately think of an obvious comparison. Irrespective, this is a really intriguing track that reminds me of early London Grammar and I look forward to future works from the band.

Mindchatter – Trippy 

Trippy is probably the most apt song title of the year so far. This track has some wonderful production throughout, taking modern hip hop and r’n’b production, inverting it and giving it a low key vibe, not unlike what HOMESHAKE produces. Trippy reminds me of scuba diving, where time slows down and you simply marvel at everything around you. I can’t find much biographical info on Mindchatter but this seems like a debut release, which makes it all the more impressive.

Priests – The Seduction of Kansas 

Post-punk four-piece Priests have featured on the blog before, all the way back in February 2017.  They’re back with the riotously danceable The Seduction of Kansas, which brings back memories of the LCD Soundsystem/The Rapture era of indie music. An album of the same name is due to be released in April.

Grimes, HANA – We Appreciate Power (BloodPop Remix) 

I’m a huge fan of Grimes and there’s little in her back catalogue that I don’t enjoy. Yet towards the end of 2018 she was involved in two songs, a duet on Poppy’s album and her own We Appreciate Power. Both were rockier than most of her previous work, and they didn’t quite click with me. The rock element seemed a little faux, not a feeling you associate with Gimes, who is usually so good at the authenticity of whatever she’s doing. My anxiety increased when I saw that she’s a guest star on the forthcoming Bring Me The Horizon album, out on Friday.

BloodPop have taken the original We Appreciate Power and given it a very different spin. Gone are the gruff guitars and the vocals are brought to the fore. I feels it’s a much clearer insight into Grimes’s vision, of a dystopian AI controller world (“Pledge allegiance to the world’s most powerful computer, Simulation is the future”). And I think the dance twist makes this a much stronger track than the original.

Alfredo Rodriguez, Pedrito Martinez – Super Mario Bros 3 

Something a little bit different to finish on. The Cuban duo of jazz pianist Alfredo Rodriguez and percussionist Pedrito Martinez have taken on a classic theme tune for any gamers out there and given it a pretty awesome spin. It’s well worth three minutes of your time, whether you’ve owned several Nintendo consoles or not.
