Ramblings On: RTJ, Gigs, Trash, Films and the A List

Run The Jewels have announced a European tour and are heading to London in April. I managed to get tickets (thanks to Songkick for a pre-sale link). I saw RTJ at Lovebox (a London festival) last year but to say the sound was rubbish would be unfair to other garbage. I was about four rows back in the middle of the stage, but the only hint of vocals we could hear was from the onstage monitors. So I’m looking forward to actually seeing – and hearing – them do their thing properly.

2017 is already shaping up to be pretty good on the gigs front. Pumarosa  – one of the most exciting bands coming through right now – have announced another London gig, there’s Field Day, Eric Clapton, Al Stewart and lots of smaller bands already in the diary. I’ll be sharing some thoughts on those closer to the time.

One of the best things I read this week was a Guardian article on the Trash club night that used to run in London. Although I never attended the night, those that were involved in the running of the night (Erol Alkan, 2 Many DJs) and the musical artists that found fame through the night played a huge part in my musical education. But perhaps most importantly – to this site – is the music policy; they were willing to play anything. I still remain nervous about writing a blog which promotes all sorts of music, but I’ve never understood the desire to only like or listen to one genre or style of music. To my mind, good music comes in all shapes and sizes, and it was great to read that a club night that was successful found success through doing the same.

I mentioned in my last ramblings that we’ve got new columnists joining me on the blog; two of whom will start this week. Antonia is going to write regular film reviews – and also hopefully a less regular but equally exciting column on trends in film – and George is going to take on album reviews and write a less regular column on… (we haven’t quite agreed on the terminology, so forgive me here) urban music. Garage, grime, techno, hip hop… he’s going to provide a one-stop-shop on all things big in some slightly less mainstream genres.

I’ll be back later on with this week’s A List. This past week has been ridiculous in terms of excellent new music, so expect to see more change than normal. But it’s great to start the blog with some seriously exciting music.

I have to go now because Max the Yorkiepoo is awake and trying to walk on the keyboard. Until later…
